@Earl Driscoll or any of the people from the first cohort, did you guys receive the glasses yet? Corey said within 10 days on 27th Jan, it is close to 2 MONTHS, surely you guys have receive the glasses cause 10 days estimates basically means they are ready to shipped and there is no way in hell you can delay 2 months just on shipping. It would be messed up if Corey estimated 10 days but the glasses are still in production.
It has been 2 months and no video from the concussion guy. Did he died or something?
What the hell is going on? Delay after delay and no communication. Was told I was bumped into the first group and I still have had zero communication.
Corey showed a video with him signing the letters for the pre-order lock-in glasses 2 weeks ago, it seems that no one got them yet. Come on, what's going on? Not even the lock-in glasses can be delivered on time and that is basically a normal prescription glasses, I would hate to see how long we would need to wait for Alpha. We all know the scheduled date is definitely not going to be fulfilled but COME ON!! Rev 0 supposed to be delivered on December but it is going to be April now and NOTHING is happening. It feels like everything is done just for show, nothing tangible!!
It gets even more ridiculous when Corey said Rev 0 will be delivered in 10 days on Jan but nothing happens. How do you estimate 10 days but got delayed for months? 10 days estimation is no longer production issue, you cant produce the gadget in 10 days!! At that point, the only reasonable delay excuse is that the person laforge hire to send the glasses to the post office died mid way. Even so, the glasses should be delivered by now!
Like a few people here I feel that I need to express my concern about getting no updates. I ordered my pair of glasses last September and can only imagine what the people who have been waiting years to get their hands on their glasses must feel not getting any updates on the progress. That, coupled with the huge hiring stint that just started happening on April 9th have made me feel quite uneasy with the current future of the company. Luckily for us who have pre-ordered there was no time limit to which we needed to go about locking in our pre-orders (only that the choice of pair is a first come, first serve basis) so I feel comfortable withholding my lock-in until I feel comfortable that I'm actually getting something tangible. I really hope Laforge can restore the confidence I know so many of us have had shaken. If I can get my pair of glasses this year I'll be happy; if not I guess it's a case of fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
So today there was a town hall on Skype for Rev0 preorders. I missed it, it Corey reached out and we are going to connect next week. He mentioned they are in the process of making the glasses. I live in the town next to where they are being manufactured. He offered to hand deliver my pair of Rev0 and give me a hands on experience with other projects. His one condition for this is to take pictures/video of what I see and share my experience with all of you. We are going to communicate about when I can visit this coming weekend. He is very overwhelmed so please be patient.
So far we have made a couple pairs of Alpha rev0. I shared a link with some of the pre-order holders to see a video of it.
In regards to Julian, the guy known as "concussion guy", I would like to note that some of you guys are making light of a person who was recovering from a brain injury. He has recovered and caught up on his coursework at UCLA. I will be fiddling around with the camera this week to capture an image of our latest optics and explain what's going on. If I decide to do blog post about it wont be around until next week at the earliest. I have allowed Julian to focus on a marketing activity for a start-up I am advising him on.
I am intending to do a major project update this month, perhaps as early as this week. I have been withholding the next major update because I was focused on production activities and getting our next round of private investment kicked off.
In an age of cryptocrashes, fake news, and crowdfunded projects that turn out to be vaporware, I recognize that people can have a hard time sorting out what's real from what's not. My goal over the next couple of months is to put into action a plan that tells the story of the world's first Digital Eyewear Company. I recognize that when it comes to shipment estimates we have been repeatedly off (better yet, way the fuck off). We have been improving systems and working with other companies to improve our processes. Making these decisions, finding talent, and training people does not happen overnight.
Over the course of this project going from a series of blog posts to a company I have been accused of being a stock image on a linkedIn Profile, a genius, a scammer, fired from the Company. Though none of these are true (especially the genius talk) it does remove the consideration that perhaps I'm such a huge fan of the opportunity that I left industry and put my reputation on the line to build something that no other company thought could be built. Like you all I am a fan of this space, like you all I feel let down by the other product offerings out there. I too am tired of seeing silicon valley bullshit like Juicero, CastAR, and others that promise to chsnge the world but give us nothing.
So over the next few weeks I'm doing something different. I'm putting the product into people's hands. They can see where we are, have a better understsanding of the product, and perhaps offer suggested improvements. The purpose of this forum is not to attack or discredit each other but to form conversation and concensus about what is possible. The more people dig into me and this company the more they will find hard work based in a scientific method. I'd like to see the coversation on here be a conversation. If you want to find someone who is making an AR devices that can have AI capabilty at an affordable price, you have me. I may not be the person you want, but until someone else shows up and does a better job at making themself available for comment, critisim, and partnership, I'm all you got.
For the TL;DR's:
An update on 'concussion guy'
A bunch of me revealing that I am human being that is not good making shipping estimates
Me saying that we are putting rev0 in people's hands this month
Me implying that I'm some sort of leader in this industry who's trying to drive end-user cost down
Oh and... this image of an early version of our AR system working provided by our development partner
An image from a early prototype to test the indoor brightness of our near to eye optics. This takes place at The Technology Partnership's office in Cambridge, UK. This optic is 2mm x 2mm approximatley 15mm away from the camera and is in focus with objects outside of a window that are several meters away.
As stated in a previous post, please do not mistake my lack of commenting or replies as me ignoring you or as a problem. We are hardware company that is doing more than "putting a circuit board in a box". Things take time and there are some details we view as critical before just releasing them onto people.
For those of you who have made it this far congrats.
I missed the email for the town hall, super disappointed.. 1 day late..
This is the first time Laforge admits its weaknesses, definitely a step up. I did not get any emails regarding the town hall, is it only open to Rev 0 backers? Also I did not get any link to see the video. Corey, will there be a new shipping schedule on the upcoming updates? I do hope you come up with a more realistic estimate with ample buffer this time. I find it odd that you are still at Rev0 production stage, it has been 7 months since rev0 production started and it is for merely 30 pairs of glasses, do explain why does it take so long to produce 30 pairs and how will the next 1,000 plus pairs to be produced? 40 x 7 months = 280 months ro complete the alpha program?
Here's what I will be going over in the next update:
Explanation of what LAFORGE does. We get a lot of comparisons to other companies that mostly put circuit boards in plastic boxes. I think a comparison of how the company is structured vs how other startups in the space are structured may help explain what is going on in the background.
A high-level overview of successes over the last quarter: Patents, fulfilments, Company developments in Asia
An explanation of how production ramp up works. This should directly address your (hopefully not serious) 280 month explanation
An explanation of the LAFORGE production system. I hear people use the word batches and thing s like that. I don't believe people understand what "batch" means in manufacturing sense so I will explain that as well as why we are using a system of Kanbans, and continuous flow for our Just in Time manufactuing structure.
There will also be images of the alpha Rev0 and thorough explanantion of its purpose and differences between it and alpha rev1. I could do a better job explaining the the revisions so this be my opportunity.
A detailed look into how our optics work and how they compare with other systems.
A look into our advances on scaling production and cost reduction. For example a year ago each prototype was costing us $10,000 now they are costing us less than $300 to build. I think people may find it interesting how we reduced cost that much and what we are doing to further reduce cost without sacrificing functionality or quality.
A project overview. It will show all the elements of the project whats completed and what's not.
The only thing I won't be including are shipping estimates. These are being handled on a case by case basis, and we are working on a solution that will get us better estimates in the future. We aren't Apple or Amazon. We are a tiny company (one of only about 5 left in the space, there were about 15 two years ago) so we have to focus on what's key: getting product out of the door. We have been making shipments of the lock-in eyewear for about a month.
If there is anything anyone would like to have added to the next update please let me know.
I believe you should give a shipping estimates cause otherwise it will be an indefinite wait all over again (june 17 update). Perhaps an estimate to when Alpha program completes. Example, last unit alpha will be shipped by december 2018 would at least allow the preoders to know that they will be getting the glass on 2018. Also, do update the waitlist.. it has been overdue since feb.
But none of this explains where those pre-order lock-in test glasses are? Weren´t they shipped mid March?
@Adam: Those have been going out since mid-March. Anyone who hasn't recieved them yet hasn't replied to our emails or we simply haven't gotten to them yet. Everything we do here is a test for something else (in this case a test of fulfilment processes, an inventory system, and a new Rx database). I wouldn't make a video of me signing letters with envelopes stuffed with eyewear in the background as a way to mislead people. This has gotten ridiculous.
I agree. People need to understand that you pre ordered into a pre-alpha where nothing is set in stone. The product is still developing and laforge (or Corey for that matter) arent held to any time table. They company is alive and working on products. If the company isn't happy with the current product, they shouldn't be forced to release it just because pre-order people impatient.
Prohaps the ship dates were premature and probably Corey truly hoped things would have shipped at those times. Things happen. The fact that the company has big investers means they are going to stay around.
@Corey How many have you shipped for the lock-in offer?
@Anyone who receive the lock-in glass, mind sharing pictures of it? I know it's just a regular glass but damn I want to see someone receiving something
@Kyle, it's understandable if this is the 2nd or 3rd delay. However, this project has been delayed for quite a few years now since it was first announced for pre-order (not even counting the indiegogo days). It has passed any reasonable dateline for a project hence it is reasonable that the people would start to question the project especially if it is a vaporware. As pointed out by some people on FB, this isn't a crowdfunding project, which means we are the customers not backers and under the consumer law, any scheduled delivery set out is a binding contract (hence it is even more vital for the company to come out to apologize and explain whenever there is a delay). Laforge does not have big investors (I wouldn't call Somo or NST "Big" in anyway) and even if they do, it does not guarantee anything. There are many startup with actual big investors that defaulted. Take the popular PlastC for example, they had patents granted and they had multiple investors including big MNC like Mitsubishi yet at the end of the day they defaulted, sold their assets to another company and left all the backers empty handed.
You may be right about the mishaps with the expected delivery dates but you act like there is no protection for the consumer if a business defaults. I was a backer for Plastc, they went under, I called my bank and told them what happened. They refunded my money and went after the company to recoup their money since they have better lawyers then I can afford.
So cool it people. This is new technology not a video game where developers know how to make it and can predict coding, manufacturing and shipping estimates. It's a start up company making something never seen before. A start up company figuring out the kinks of JiT Inventory and international communications syncing with everyone.
Just my $0.02
@Corey Fair enough, but it's a touch odd that NOONE has had any comments on the glasses and the Phantom display...
Your 2 cents made no sense. First of all, your so called "protection" is called a chargeback. Typically the maximum allowable chargeback period is 120 days (depending on your bank some may be more, some may be less). This project has long past a few years for most and I highly doubt there are many banks out there would allow a chargeback period of 3 freaking years! That is why some scamming company purposely delay time and giving excuse so that they could void the chargeback period. Second, not all countries practices chargeback, most banks in Asia do not allow chargeback despite this being a condition under Visa/Mastercard. Third, have you ever thought that some people might be using DEBIT CARD or other means of transaction that does not have chargeback or similar protection? Please don't so casually say"SO COOL IT PEOPLE"when you have not done your research.
I won't say it is something people have not seen before cause intel/zeiss and quite a few companies already debuted their AR glass (casual AR glass like Laforge mind you), it's just a matter of time that they are announcing their release to the public which further makes the anticipation for the Alpha even greater. How long do you think you should wait? 10 years? 20 years? I believe most of us have been extremely patient cause we did not even make a sound for a few years (for us early backers) whereas if you see other projects in kickstarter getting a shit ton of heat just after 6 months of delay from the original estimated shipping date.
